In the 1950's and 1960's, especially in the Southeast Region of the United States, being bi-racial was like a death sentence. For one seven-year-old boy, it led to being torn from the home he loved and sent to an orphanage where he was told he was "in denial of being a Negro". This is my story. It is a gripping story that depicts my thirteen-year social and emotional adjustment to institutional childcare, post transition and survival. As probably the first, bi-racial out-of-home placement case on file in North Carolina and other states in the Deep South, it provides a foundation to inspire and motive discussion for others who are also battling issues of abandonment and displacement.
