Holiness. We were made for it. It's our heart's deepest longing and our true spiritual home. When we come to Christ, the "new self" we put on is "created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:24). But this transformation doesn't happen automatically. We have to desire it and pursue it. That's why, with all our dedication to Christ and the church, we can still feel incomplete in our Christian lives. We have yet to earnestly pursue a path that connects us deeply with our heavenly Father, a path that leads us to identify with God and to share his character traits. That path is the pursuit of holiness. It's a path that leads us home-home to God, home to what we were created for. It's the essence of new life in Christ, where we find our highest purpose, our greatest satisfaction, and our deepest joy. Coming Home to Holiness is about three things: (1) First, it's about a holy God. A God who is perfect and pure in every way. A God who is sinless, who always does what is right and fair and good. A God who is exalted in Heaven for his holiness. (2) Second, it's about God's plan to display his holiness in his creation. He calls us to be holy because he is holy-to identify with him in his holiness. And he promises to bless us richly as we do. (3) Third, it's about the path God has laid out to lead us to holiness. A path paved by the spiritual disciplines. As we engage in the disciplines, doing what we are capable of doing, we position ourselves so that God can take over to do what only he can do to affect transformation.
