On community college campuses across the nation, immigrant students are looking to further their educations in American classrooms. Yet the people committed to buoying them along on their educational journeys may know little about the histories these students bring with them, the landscapes they grew up in, or the adjustments they have had to make. Based on a series of interviews and observations by an experienced instructor of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), this book brings to light the stories of eight immigrant students in an urban college. These intimate stories of war, poverty, discrimination, workplace challenges, street violence, and the struggle for democracy-and of the commitment and support of family and community-will inspire college educators to reflect on what moves them to service as they search to support these students in their academic success.
