The year is 2831. For thousands of years the galaxy has been in a state of war, with only preludes of peace to keep civilization alive. The first galactic war saw two empires tear each other apart, leaving their colonies separated in the aftermath. These colonies rebuilt themselves and forged alliances with each other. Now they are the leagues; massive military forces that protect their worlds and fight each other for territory and resources. Their lust for power and paranoia to their allies resulted in the second galactic war, where ten leagues grew so powerful that they nearly tore the galaxy apart. Because of their mistrusting and paranoid natures, the leagues must be kept under heel by the governments of the cradleworlds, (such as Earth), and the galactic leadership the cradleworlds support: the Ancients. This over-encompassing label as troublemakers that passes over the leagues and their colonies has resulted in dystopian worlds and the suffering of billions, but has kept the peace for hundreds of years, for the sake of the billions not associated with the leagues. In the wake of a massive and destructive riot on the galactic capital, Heralden, several years ago, the leagues are in flux. Many support the Ancients' decision to tighten the laws against the leagues that cause trouble, while others are coming to the conclusion that the Ancients intend to wipe out the leagues using the law. Alliances are breaking while new ones form. These changing tides are resulting in rising chaos. A mercenary has somehow claimed a vicious fleet and begun a warpath throughout many league territories; inciting war among their neighbors and leaving millions dead. He is searching for something, but no one has an idea what it is. Now he has his sights set on an exile who holds the key to discovering the truth of his intentions, and the darkness that is surrounding him.
