Gogol's Art: A Search for Identity is a critical appraisal of the work of the great 19th century Russian writer N. V. Gogol, (1809-1852), who created a new direction in Russian letters. The "Gogolian" trend was further developed by writers like M. Dostoevsky, V. Rozanov, A. Bely, M. Bulgakov and A. Sinyavsky, amongst others. Born in the Ukraine, Gogol published in Russian, the common language of the Russian Empire, just as much as it was during the Soviet period. However with the recent separation of the Ukraine and Russia- this has turned into an issue of national identity including a reappraisal of their formerly common cultural heritage expressed in the works of N. V. Gogol. This revised, second publication by Slavicist Laszlo Tikos includes new introductions by Professors Y. Nechiporenko Moscow University and A. Korablev, Donetsk National University, Ukraine.
