Apocalypse
Robin Yokel
Discontentment and desire, death and new beginnings weave together in this collection of poems. Yokel gives voice to an eclectic menagerie of characters, from a college co-ed getting her first tattoo in "Virgin," to an increasingly dissatisfied Helen of Troy in "Helen I-V," to a war veteran struggling with Alzheimer's in "Rag Doll." In language at times gentle, at times vicious, these poems tell stories of first love, self-acceptance, and the fallibility of perception and memory. As Yokel says in "Green," "Colors might be just a trick of the light," but words, and the images and memories they evoke, are what distinguish us as human.
