Another complicated case for the private detective Chauncy, from Sydney. Not long after he has given the book he has just written about the late PM Harold Holt's disappearance at Portsea in 1967 to a literary critic, a man is found dead in the critic's home in Paddington. And the critic himself, Raymond C., has disappeared. The widow and the insurance company are both involved as clients, and we learn that the man was a protected witness in a case of tax evasion.
