Samantha Rose Johnson is a tough, cynical, but law-school educated, licensed private detective working in Elgin, Illinois. From growing up biracial in the tough South Sangamon neighborhood of Chicago in the seventies, to a tour with the United States Army Military Police Corps where she completed Air Assault training, Sam knows what life can throw at you. When she encounters thugs of any stripe who ask her who she thinks she is, she's glad to stare them in the eyes and reply with a sardonic grin, "straight up bitch, comma optional" . In If You Can't Trust Your Client... Sam is retained by the partner of an attorney she has done work for to find a client who skipped out on their bill for legal services provided. Sam more directly involves her associate Diana in the investigation, and together they must find a young man who's hiding hard.
