Maura, a sword for hire, returns to her home village to finish her wizard training under her grandfather, the wizard Carrack. Joined by her mercenary friend Darian, they must fight their way through bizarre magicked creatures. But the fight doesn't end there. Once they reach her village she must face her biggest foe, Esrath, the old wizard that made her earlier apprenticeship miserable. The old woman is still at it and to make matters worse has forced Maura with an ultimatum: continue as a warrior or a wizard, but not both. Darian and her family do all they can to help, but only Maura can decide.
