A young woman penetrates the depths of the sea to birth a river. A bitter monk's soul hardens to stone. A misunderstood queen hides her people's past, and future, in the form of four swans. These and other old tales haunt a hollow in the medieval Irish hills, where an illiterate peasant girl wanders in search of mystery-and confronts a monk shaping history with occult calligraphic arts. Thief of Tales brings together a razor-tongued, shapeshifting wisewoman, a defrocked priest and storyteller, a talking bird, a corrupt abbot and a stern foreign warlord, in a duel between the spoken and written word for the mastery of a people's fate.
