Having had the good fortune to visit Martha's Vineyard for a number of years in the past I continue to be struck how parallel national histories and varied cultures blend on that island. Yet its natural beauty ranges from vast seascapes to minute simple images which all have a calming effect. Maybe that contributes to the peaceful aura about the place. I have often felt that images and verse can share a partnership in expression. Generally you can say that an image and a poem do not need each other because each possesses its own type of abstraction. Just to fly in the face of this attitude, in this book I trade the picture's face value of one thousand words for a mere haiku. That is quite the verbal discount.
