This is the story of two privates in the Civil War, one in the infantry the other in the cavalry. They were two young farm boys from Illinois, suddenly thrust into the tumult of war. Alexander Weaver and Jeremiah Lushbough fought in the Western theater under General Ulysses S. Grant, and participated in the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Much has been written about the campaigns and generals, but what was life like for the privates? Using regimental histories and service records, the book traces each soldier's experiences from mustering in and training, through the battles, to discharge. Throughout the war, Alexander rode his horse, scouting and fighting in eight states. During his service, Jeremiah did miles of marching, through six states. Sometimes the troops were transported by rail and river boats, other times they covered ground marching 10 to 12 miles a day. Note: cover picture, "Battle of Vicksburg" by Kurz and Allison, 1863. This work is in the public domain.
