Since 2012, Germany has taken in millions of refugees, while countries such as the U. S. seem to have rarely noticed what this means for the refugees, native Germans, and those left behind in the countries and conflict zones from which the refugees had to flee. In her first novel, written after living among refugees in Germany, Stephanie Humphries takes readers into the refugee compound to witness life for fictional refugees. In particular, readers get to know one family, whose past is described but whose names and home country are left to the reader's imagination. A mature ten-year-old boy named only as X provides insights that illustrate some of the joys, perplexities, and challenges refugee children find along their journeys.
