My Almost Dad is a short story written through the eyes of many children. Each child gives the reader insight into their relationship with an adult who has assumed the role of father in their life. There is no mention of devoicing, death, or separation. The reader can adopt any position she or he wishes regarding the many almost dads in this story. The almost dad can be a grandfather, uncle, or family friend. This story is inspired by a young man who tragically lost his biological father. The first scenario is inspired by my oldest great-nephew, Zachary, who has called me da-da. We both laugh when he does because I am not his dad. He has a stable home life with his father, mother, brothers, and sister; but, his words express that I engender trust and nurture. While I am not his dad, I am a surrogate dad-an almost dad. I challenge you, the reader, to think about the children you have helped guide through the perils and delights of childhood. My sincerest hope is that you will be moved to impact at least one child positively and profoundly. Perhaps that child will one day say that you are their almost dad.
