Popeye the Sailor made hamburger patties by wadding a hunk of ground meat in his armpit and squashing it flat. The cooks in this story didn't prepare hamburgers that way, but Popeye may have wanted a shot to protect against hoof and mouth disease if he had witnessed their other infractions. Confession: I'm not a chef. I'd need a permit from the fire department if I were to attempt a flaming cherries jubilee. But I did a stint behind the scenes in a restaurant which no longer exists. Its name has been changed to protect the innocent--and the guilty. For added spice, I've stirred a bit of crime and romance into this exposé. Buon appetito!
