This is a compilation of letters penned by Col. Samuel Morris Wickersham to his wife starting in the fall of 1862 as he entered the Civil War. On the return from the war he revitalized his iron brokerage business and became a steel company executive. He appears to be an honest and determined entrepreneur in the bustling iron business in Pittsburgh in the latter half of the 19th century. As his health or business began to fail he downsized his home and prodded his sons to go out on their own. Pertinent memorandum and sketches are provided that define the remainder of his life. The book concludes with an epilogue that explains the life of his wife and children after his death. Throughout the editor has added a bit of history and some narrative to fill the voids in the chronology. Volume 3, of this series, is an assembly of letters to Samuel's wife Frances from their children and relatives.
