"Amid Grieving Gods" is a collection of twenty-six poems. Twenty-four were composed within a period of five years-between 1966 and 1971- and vary in topic and complexity, which carry an appeal to romantic lovers, social scientists, theoretical physicists, and the philosophically minded. A memoir precedes the collection, which gives historical context to the poetry and reveals the author's emotional and intellectual dispositions that gave rise to the verse. The memoir includes an abridged account of the author's hike across America in 1968, which began in Massachusetts, wound through Washington D. C. and stretched to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. The book is illustrated by forty photographs, which assist in the interpretation of what are, in some cases, enigmatic poetic images.
