This book identifies the need of carbon by the chemical and transport industry in the short-medium term and categorizes the available renewable carbon-sources alternative to fossil carbon and discusses their usability and potential in a short-medium-long term. The constraints to the use of biomass (grown on purpose and waste) are discussed together with the recycling of the waste plastics. The challenge is considerable, and no single technology can provide the solution.

Rather, progress will depend on the intelligent integration of multiple pathways, selected according to their technological maturity, energy requirements, environmental performance, economics, and specific fields of application. It is within this broader perspective that the present volume aims to contribute to the scientific and technological development of a more sustainable and circular management of carbon. This Book has been produced within the EU funded Project DESIRED - HORIZON Research and Innovation Actions - Grant n° 101083355.
