Synthetic substances such as antibiotics produced by the pharmaceutical industry have in many cases caused side effects such as nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea and have caused the emergence of resistance by pathogenic bacteria, to such an extent that an increasing number of researchers are seeking to produce biologically active compounds from natural sources. One important source of natural products are medicinal plants which have been used as traditional medicine in different parts of the world for many applications such as the treatment of infectious diseases, diarrhea, hypertension, skin diseases and other conditions.
