The inflammatory and immune response after a laparoscopic and an open colectomy is assessed. The basic principles of the immune respose are cited. The medical literature is reviewed and the studies comparing cytokines and other substances promoting inflammation between laparoscopic and open colectomies are highlighted. The personal experience of the author with a similar study is also presented. Some valuable results are extracted.
