Oral administration has been most versatile convenient and commonly employed route of drug delivery. Sustained release drug delivery system have started gaining popularity and acceptance as new drug delivery system due to better control over release for extended time. Conventionally there are two types of granulation methods i.e. wet and dry granulation. But these methods have number of disadvantages such as number of steps, equipments, labors, wastage of materials hence costly. Today's Pharmaceutical industry require minimum step, simple, continuous and efficient method. Melt granulation offers several advantages compared to conventional granulation since the liquid addition and subsequent drying step are omitted. Thus process is less consuming in terms of time and energy compared to other methods. Hence in this book an attempt has been made to develop sustained release tablet of Verapamil HCl using some lipophilic binders by melt granulation technique. Also effect of different process parameters such as concentration and type of lipophilic binders, methods of preparation, stirring time and different release enhancers on drug release was studied.
