Surface and Groundwater Contamination from Landfill: a Model Study Isaac Oladejo Olaniyan

The potential of the Kaduna landfill leachate to contaminate groundwater and surface water systems were evaluated using mathematical models under the worst conditions expected after construction. The results are predictive, and are based on both existing and measured data. The proposed facility, though desirable, would pose some threat to natural water bodies. A comprehensive leachate management scheme is recommended in addition to containment of leachate using impermeable liner system, perimeter and base blinding and post-construction monitoring.
