Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic medication used mainly in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Short gastric residence times and unpredictable gastric emptying times can overcome using floating drug delivery system (FDDS). Floating dosage forms that are designed to stay in the stomach for a long time have the advantage of reducing the variability in bioavailability which occurs with some currently available immediate as well as modified release systems.
