Cryptographic Processing is a standard enabler of many protected computing systems. Using cryptographic methods such as encryption and secure hashing, we can suit a number of crucial security requirements for networks, computers, and information against a diverse set of threats. As the security has become a compulsory component for business applications in many areas, research for modernizing the existing algorithms or formulation of new cryptographic algorithms are desirable. It presents a survey on Cryptography, merits and demerits of some of the existing cryptographic algorithms and their enhancements in the recent past. It mainly focuses about a new cryptographic permutation and substitution algorithm by name it is "Play Color Cipher", in which alphanumeric characters, symbols, diagrams and images are considered for conversion in to cipher text. To build a strong cipher a number of permutation, substitution, iterative and modular arithmetic functions are incorporated. Seven versions of the play color cipher algorithm are introduced. The merits and demerits of the each version are explained. The cryptanalysis carried out on the final version proves that the algorithm.
