Emperor Haile Selassie was revered as the Messiah by so many people around the world. For almost half a century, he ruled his country quite peacefully. Shortly after his death, strange things began to happen in Ethiopia: civil unrest, mass executions, and war. It appeared as if a powerful spirit was out for vengeance. Daniel, 21, is caught amid this turmoil. He stumbles into a situation where he shoots a top government official responsible for the death of his girlfriend and gets apprehended right away. Not long after, a Kangaroo court sentences him to death by firing squad. Meanwhile, his brother, a veteran guerrilla fighter, devises a dazzling plan to rescue him. THE CONSEQUENCE is a story of a family that struggles to survive the mayhem of the post-Haile Selassie era. ... The road between Addis and Dessie was lined with starving people, hundreds of them, begging for a bowl of grain, a scrap of cloth, pleading for their lives. I stopped at many villages on my way to investigate the famine. I saw horrible things wherever I stopped. Every village was full of suffering and death. Everywhere I saw people carrying corpses, digging graves, grieving, wailing, and praying. Wherever I stopped, hundreds of them rushed to my cars, pressing up against the glass, faces twisted with the pain of hunger, crying for help. It was like being in hell with swarms of the damned shrieking in pain, imploring me for relief from the torments. Yet, there was nothing I could do to alleviate their suffering. It was very difficult to take, especially when I had eaten well that morning.
