In the novel, we follow Harding, a Costa-Rican-born American journalist and photographer, as he chases stories from Virginia to Miami, from Guatemala City to Havana, first trying to discover why no one can find a dignified burial place for a homeless black man in the Deep South, then, working for a Miami newspaper, trying to discover who ordered a village massacre at Salta Tigre, Cubans infiltrating Guatemala or the Guatemalan Army itself.
