Each year as the forest leaves begin to yellow, the budding young students from a cluster of small towns and villages on the west coast of Galand come together and undertake a forever standing rite of passage. They must journey eastwards, visiting monasteries and citadels in order to study under the Masters in the arts of magic in order to discover and nurture any magic that may reside in them. The King's Throne is under siege in the east, and although the tentative group are not yet aware, the war slowly seeps into the quiet plains and forests further west with each passing moon. Rumours of an ancient darkness stirring in the wilderness are still considered paranoia, despite the mounting disappearances. Ida Kannin, a girl who has recently come of age, has to deal with her mother's failing health and subsequent departure for one of the healing houses in the north. She leaves her now empty home and has to rely on herself as she begins on her journey. Dealing with her independence will be scary, but there is something out there that Ida should be much more scared of.
