A young master-blacksmith from the northern island of Isenkliff wanders the world and finds that his ability to fight is more prized than his craft. But perhaps he only met the wrong people, and there is a market for Aurora steel? Kitt comes to Nurkande, a caravan town of the Golden Necklace, on the border of the red desert Kisil Kora. Trade on the caravan roads has come to a standstill because the Dragon-Lord has risen and loosed the Dragon-Sons to steal, torture and murder. Dragons don't exist - do they?Kitt meets the crime lord Salawar and his gentlemen of fortune, and starts working for them. Soon, dead men lie in the streets, and the Nurkande city guards are no further in their search for a murderer of women. Forty Emerald Princesses give their all to protect their Darling King, the last of the Tarkuni and descendant of water fairies. After Kitt has eliminated all his competitors, Salawar double-crosses him, which comes as no surprise; he has his answer ready. Crime-ridden Nurkande sees yet another massacre and the authorities mop up the bloody shreds a mysterious killer has left of the criminals who threaten harmless citizens. Kitt finds out about the Dragon-Sons and enters the wondrous city of Varakhsha, which is above the desert sands for only one day and one night.
