The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child's education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Sight words are critical to reading not only because they are used so frequently, but also because many of them cannot easily be sounded out or illustrated. Many of the over 200 "sight words" do not follow the basic phonics principles, thus they cannot be "sounded out."
