The Havamal is a poem of wisdom and magic attributed to the god Odin. He is known by many names, one of which is Allfather, therefore, it comes to no surprise that his advice is expressed in a fatherly yet schoolmasterly tone. This poem is found among other treasured Old Norse writings in the Codex Regius, an Icelandic codex. The ca. 1270s manuscript consists of 45 vellum leaves of which 8 additional ones are missing. Scholars believe that the poems date back to the 9th and 10th century respectively. The word Havamal is thought to mean "sayings of the high one" or "sayings of the one-eyed one", referring to the Allfathers recommended code of conduct. The poetic code is regarded by many heathens as a rule and guide to their faith and practice. This work is written with those in mind who are interested in learning about Old Norse poetry or for those who have been searching for an easy to read English translation. We hope that you will enjoy Allfathers magic.
