The Late Great United States Constitution
William F Tofte
The original Constitution rests sedately in the National Archives Museum in Washington, D. C. It now lies in state, as a mere symbol, a relic of a distant past. The Constitution is dead. Like the body of a corpse, whose hair and nails continue to grow, portions of the Constitution may appear alive and well, but the heart ceases to beat. From our abandonment of its foundational principles of self-governance, separation of powers, and limited government, the Constitution has suffered both a death of a thousand cuts, and several mortal wounds. Constitutional mandates with regard to Legislation, Regulation, Commerce, Money, Spending, Taxes, War, the Military, and 10th Amendment have all been violated in critical ways. Congresses, Presidents, and Supreme Courts have been accomplices in the death of the Constitution, yet hope for its restoration lies in the Constitution itself-amendments at an Article V Convention of States.
