Redundant, divorced and disenchanted, engineer and part-time musician, Leo Coyne heads to Edinburgh to investigate the possibility of starting a new life there. Little does he realise he will end up being pursued by a pair of muggers, an autistic young man, a family, and the mafia. Attacked by muggers, followed by strangers, and unsettled by people staring at him and quickly looking away, he begins to wonder if this is the place for him. Then he meets Fiona Frielle ...
