The Afghan Whigs | Soft Control
Four decades into their career, The Afghan Whigs return with Soft Control, their tenth studio album and one of the most focused and emotionally powerful releases in the band's critically acclaimed catalog. On the album, frontman Greg Dulli finds himself in a reflective corner, where with new clarity and confidence he looks back at the passage of time, while The Afghan Whigs retain the dark intensity, emotional tension, and soul-inspired alternative rock that has characterized the band since its inception.
Soft Control was recorded in a number of renowned studios, including Fireside Sound in Joshua Tree, Marigny Studios in New Orleans, Gold Diggers Sound in Los Angeles, and Sycamore in Cincinnati. Out of 22 recorded songs, the album has been cut down to a tightly compiled 37-minute collection. The result is an album that balances explosive, guitar-driven moments with a somber atmosphere and introspective songwriting. Soft Control also features guest appearances from former Afghan Whigs drummer Patrick Keeler, singer and violist Petra Haden, My Morning Jacket's keyboardist Bo Koster, and several other collaborators.
