The Social Reckoning (2026 film)
The Social Reckoning is an intense drama thriller that serves as a standalone sequel to David Fincher's Oscar-winning 2010 film The Social Network. This time, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has taken the director's chair himself and shifted the focus from the founding of Facebook to the extensive controversies that have since surrounded the world's largest social media platform.
The story in The Social Reckoning is based on the events surrounding Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), who in 2021 leaked thousands of internal documents from the company. The documents indicated, among other things, that Facebook was aware of serious problems regarding misinformation, harmful content, and the impact of social media on young people. Together with investigative journalist Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) from The Wall Street Journal, Haugen begins a risky battle to bring the truth to the public.
At the same time, the film follows the power struggles behind the scenes at Facebook, where founder Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jeremy Strong, is at the center of a growing crisis. As the revelations gain momentum, both the company's credibility and its enormous influence on society are challenged. The story develops into an intense David vs. Goliath drama about power, morality, journalism, and the consequences that can arise when technological ambitions and commercial interests collide with social responsibility.
With The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin returns to one of his most well-known cinematic universes, but with a significantly different narrative. Where The Social Network was about the ambitions and conflicts behind the creation of Facebook, the new film examines the consequences of the platform's global dominance.
