December 14, 1959 – a historic date: On this day, Time Out was released on Columbia Records. The album was recorded by Dave Brubeck (piano) and his quartet – with Paul Desmond (alto saxophone), Eugene Wright (bass), and Joe Morello (drums) – between May 25 and August 18, 1959, at Columbia's 30th Street Studios in New York. Initially, Columbia Records showed only limited enthusiasm for the results of the recordings. This was also reflected in contemporary reviews, where several critics felt that Time Out was a betrayal of jazz. However, this did nothing to slow the album's success: In 1961, Paul Desmond's composition "Take Five" reached the top of the charts. The track, written in 5/4 time, became the first jazz recording to sell over a million copies and remains the most successful jazz single ever. The album became a crucial milestone for the genre, even though Brubeck and his band moved away from the classic 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures and deliberately experimented with new rhythmic expressions. In short: The album is truly outstanding – even though so many people love it! In 2011, it was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America after sales of two million copies.

AudioNautes Recordings pays tribute to Time Out with a sonically outstanding, limited, and individually numbered 2LP box set in an edition of 1,500 copies. The exclusively designed box contains a four-page booklet as well as both LPs, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal Media with the advanced One-Step process and cut at 45 RPM. The impressive remastering is based on an older backup copy of the original stereo master tape. To achieve the best possible sound quality, Fabio Camorani, the man behind AudioNautes, chose to alter the original track order so that each record side contains a maximum of two or three tracks. Therefore, LP 2 is a single-sided vinyl release.
